Mammography
What is a mammogram?
A mammogram (also called mammography exam) is a safe low-dose x-ray of the breast that is performed on an outpatient basis. A mammogram is the most effective screening tool to detect and diagnose breast disease in women. Your mammography exam will be performed by a registered mammography technologist. During the mammography exam the technologist will position your breast on a special platform allowing only the breast to be exposed to the x-ray. The unit contains a tray that is lowered to compress the breast and positions it so images can be taken at different angles. The exam should take about 20 minutes.
When should I have a mammogram?
You should discuss this with your physician. You need to be on a regular schedule for mammograms. Our office follows the current guideline recommendations from the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Radiology which recommends a mammography screening every year for women, beginning at age 40.
How do I prepare for the mammogram exam?
Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment to complete the health information for your electronic medical record.
- The day of your exam do not wear deodorant or body powder under your arms or on your breasts.
- Two-piece clothing is more convenient.
- Obtain prior mammograms and bring them with you to your appointment. If your mammogram was conducted at FirstHealth or Pinehurst Radiology we can request those films for you.
How do I get my results?
A physician who is a radiologist will study your mammogram and report the results to your physician. Your physician will discuss the results with you. You will also receive a letter in the mail stating the results of your test.
How will I be billed?
You will receive two bills, one from Pinehurst Surgical and one from the Radiologist that reads your mammography exam. Please be prepared to pay your co-pay, deductible, or expected out-of-pocket at time of service.
