Health Maintenance

Women who do not see their primary care physician on an annual basis often use their ob/gyn physician as a source of health maintenance.

Weight loss programs:  Annual exams include height and weight with body mass index calculation providing the physician with information as to whether or not the patient should be on a weight loss program.

Cholesterol screenings:  Women over 40 are also screened annually for cholesterol. These screenings enable the physician to determine if the patient needs dietary instruction or medication.

Mammograms:  A baseline mammogram is recommended at age 40 by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Mammogram screenings are the most comprehensive way to detect breast cancer at an early stage.

Bone Mass Densitometry:  After the age of 50 bone mass is an indicator of osteoporosis.  A bone scan every two years allows the physician to determine the need to treat or continue to monitor a patient's current therapy.
