What is a Nurse Practitioner?
A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced education, usually a masters degree in nursing, in the diagnosis and management of medical conditions. They are nationally certified and licensed by the state with the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. Nurse Practitioners may treat acute and chronic conditions, prescribe medications and bill insurance companies directly for their services. They work in collaboration with physicians in specialty practice settings. With individualized care being the core philosophy of nursing and the concept of caring being quintessential to nursing, the Nurse Practitioner provides medical care that strengthens patient advocacy, patient participation and patient satisfaction.
